As a longtime Doc Savage fan, one of the things that irritates me
about Philip Jose Farmer's APOCALYPTIC LIFE book is that he will often
mention something that occurred in an adevnture, or something which
Doc or one of the Fabulous Five said or did, WITHOUT telling the
reader exactly _which_ story he is referring to.
I have managed to track down a lot of these references, but there are
some I atill can't locate after all my reading, so I have decided to
defer to the experts, as it were.
So if any of you out there could please tell me in which adventures
the following occurred, I would very much appreciate the help. Thank
you.
1. In which story does Doc apparently lip-read Chinese?
2. In the early adventures, the HQ skyscraper is often said to be
"nearly a hundred stories" tall. This soon settled down to stating
that Doc's 86th floor was the top one. But one story, Farmer says,
gives the skyscraper exactly 102 stories. In which book does this
occur?
3. In which adventure (by Davis, I presume?) does Chemistry, dressed
up in Monk's clothes, actually fool the villains & lead them on a
chase?
4. In which book is Monk called "a dwarf edition of King Kong"?
5. In which adventure is Ham called "one of the TEN best-dressed men
in America? (instead of the usual # 1)
6. In which story is ir said that Monk can untie knots with his toes?
7. In which adventure is Doc described as being "deeply tanned by many
tropical suns"? (I'm looking for that exact wording)
8. I know that in THE LAND OF TERROR (p. # 22), Doc is said to ahve
once saved the life of NYC's "leading political boss, the most
influential man in city government". And in THE PHANTOM CITY (p. #
42), it is said that Doc once saved the Police Commissioner's life.
But, according to Farmer, there are also supposedly specific
references to Doc's having saved the lives of the Mayor &/or Governor,
as well. In which stories?
9. In which adventure is it stated that Monk never exercises, but
depends on his rough life to keep him fit?
10. In which book is there supposedly Dent's only reference to Johnny
being a longhair (wearing his hair in "scholastic length" of
"scholastic style")?
11. In which adventures does Doc use BOTH hypnosis & truth serum when
questuioning someone?
12. In which story is it said that Monk's feet make a distinctiuve
sound when he's pacing back-and-forth in an upset condition?
13. In which single adevnture, according to Farmer, is Chemistry
called an "orangutan"?
14. In which adventure does Doc say, "Understand this, I'm no judge of
female character." ?
15. In which story does Monk need to "brush up" on his German (after
being said to be fluent in it in THE BLACK, BLACK WITCH)?
16. In PIRATE OF THE PACIFIC (p. # 118-119), the order in which the
group runs is given : Doc first, Johnny second, Monk & Renny together
third, Long Tom fourth, & Ham last. This is referenced by Farmer in
his chapter on Monk. But in his chapter on Renny, he apparently
references a later book in which a _diffferent_ "running order" is
given, with *Renny* & Ham being the two slowest of the five aides. In
which story can this be found?
17. In which story is there a mention of Ham piching up something-or-
other for a souvenier of the adventure, possibly to add to his
collection of such?
