THE DOC SAVAGE MOVIE

My old web page is no longer archived on AOL, so I can't list all
this, but you can do the reasearch at imdb.comif you wonder.

For so many of those involved in the DOC movie, it was their big
break. This was Ron Ely's only starring movie role (discounting
TARZAN TV compilations and a "made in West Germany" curiosity).
Captain Seas (Paul Wexler) never had a bigger part; the actors who
played Monk, Ham and Johnny never had higher billing. The
screenwriter never had another screenplay in English. It is the sole
movie credit for several of the cast and crew, and actually started
some careers with the behind-the scenes folks.

amazingly, everybody who had anything to do with the music for the DOC
SAVAGE movie had a long and very successful career in the show
biz..... And the same casting agents for this 1930's debacle also did
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK five years later. There's that fine line
between clever and stupid.

Ron Ely was the right Doc in the wrong movie.

I'd say that's a fair assessment. But Monk was the wrong Monk for ANY
movie (give me Buddy Hackett!).

DOC SAVAGE! DOC SAVAGE!"

Hey, that's what we THOUGHT the words were,
first time we saw the movie in the theater . . .

LOL!

Hackett certainly wouldn't have been any worse in the part. It was
like they glued red hair on Joe Besser (from the last comeback of the
Three Stooges).

I envision Monk looking like he spends most of his spare time at the
gym, not the buffet line.

It was as bad as someone casting Don Knotts as Superman, or I dunno,
Michael Keaton as Batman. I mean, what idiot would do that?

Agreed! With all due respect to Mike Miller who only played the role
given him, my vision of Monk was always influence by the descriptions
in the books and further by the picture on the back of the Bantam
editions. It would be a tough casting decision, but to be SO WRONG on
the call was just unforgivable.

Paul Gleason had a pretty solid career. Don't know if it would count
as higher billing, but he was in a key role in "The Breakfast Club"
which was a huge hit.
