Discussion:
THE GOLDEN MAN
(too old to reply)

One of those "there's a war going on but the US isn't in it yet,"
stories. Monk and Ham are on a ship returning from Europe. They pick
up "The Golden Man" floating in the middle of the ocean, who makes
various prophecies, whioch come true. then their ship is torpedoed
(and the Golden Man foresaw), and they have various adventures, and
spend 14 weeks in a South American jail before DOC can find them and
spring them.

14 weeks! The top detectives on the planet, funded by mule trains
full of Mayan gold, can't find two of the most distinctive human
beings there are, accompanied by a pig and an ape, in less than 14
weeks?

Kind of lame, but then the action shifts back to NYC, where the Golden
Man has set up a cult involving high society types, which DOC knows
nothing about, and leads to some chase-capture-rescue, a bizarre
blackmailing plot, an overly complicated mystery murder plan, an
unlikely connection to the Golden Man, and DOC asking Renny, "Do you
know any actors?"

All totally second rate and forgettable, excpet for that key
paragraph, where the Golden Man looks at DOC and says, "Ever since you
were born on the schooner "Orion" off the north edge of Andros
Island..." that makes this one a disappointing "Must read".

I don't know. Given the time it takes place, the world was a MUCH larger
place. Easier to drop out of site. Not a lot of phone lines in some places.
That seems possible.

And really, once Ham is out of his fashion plate garb, how distinctive is *he*?

well a naked man carrying a sword cane will tend to stand out in any
case.
even in cold weather
especially if an ape like person is nearby laughing his ass off.

True!

You have to wonder if Ham could pull off the nudist look. This is what
_all_ the best undressed Parisians aren't wearing this year..

He would still want to wear spats with his designer flip flops
and carry a tailored monogrammed towel
just as long as he invites Pat

He did, in the Spook Legion. Doc, Monk and Ham paraded around in downtown New
York in their all-togther and no one noticed them.

Sometimes I wonder if Dent had a fantastic outline and lots of ideas and notes
from a meeting with the S&S editors but other things in his life got in the way
- so when he finally set down to write the story, the energy was lost and he
abandoned a lot of the "good stuff" to crank out another Doc (It's pretty
obvious from what I've read of him that he wasn't happy doing Doc after the
first few years.)
