Actually a very early DOC saga, rather late as a Bantam reprint (in
the 1940s)

As i understand, this was the first adventure without all of the fab 5
-- only Ham, Monk, and johnny make it to England.

And outstanding adventure, although you'd think they could have held
off on the mystery of King John for a few more chapters to make it
more mysterious.

This one is memorable. One of the first novel's that I read when I
discovered Doc. Two gold flecks up.

Remembered for Monk's memorable final line about nobody getting
killed. Frankly, with all the grenades, dynamite, and machine guns,
it is a wonder. Seems like this one was set up with the old
switcheroo -- often in the early sagas, the criminal gang meets a
bloody end. In this one, the bad guys are in a building DOC has wired
with dynamite, and they actually believe him and surrender.

Too bad the phony King Johns go off-stage so quickly -- they're fairly
mysterious and entertaining.

And less than meets the eye. Sure, taxes in the UK were/are/will be
horrid, but you'd think lawyers, bribes, and accountants would be
more cost-effective than a criminal gang

You haven't worked in my industry much if you think that lawyers and
accountants aren't a criminal gang! :)
