Re-reading this one now, and just amazed at how utterly perfect a DOC
adventure it is.

And amazed at how awful the original pulp cover was. The paperback
Bantam cover was one of the biggest deceptions ever, with DOC fighting
the werewolf, but it was incredibly striking. The original pulp cover
has the "brand"of the werewolf looking like some drooling gargoyle..

To be fair, there were no werewolf/wolfman movies for the artist of the pulp
cover to imitate. Personally I find the pulp cover of much higher quality that
the (non-Bama) Bantam reprint. I know most Doc fans love it because it was the
one they bought first, but after buying about 2 dozen Docs, finally getting
BRAND OF THE WEREWOLF in the mail from Bantam was a very big disappointment.

This one is just a perfect adventure, No giant gaps in logic. Real
detecting. Innovative gadgets.

Classic DOC-isms now on-board -- mercy bullets, the pig. No mention
of the Crime College. DOC is travelling by train, and then has to buy
a plane. One of the last of the "all the bad guys get killed and it's
their own fault" ones.

Creepy with Pat, though. She's 18 years old. These guys are old
enough to be her father, for cripes sake!

In later books she becomes a young woman; no age given.
