I've finished the first third of the book.

Just an absolutely great prologue and first couple of chapters, establishing DOc was out of town when Kong fell, his relationship (!) to the beast, and solving the problem of the removal of the corpse. Then a hundred pages of DOC and his father on a slow boat (actually, fast schooner) to Skull Island. I understand Murray has to pad out the wordcount this way -- there is no market at the $24.95 price-point for a 60,000 word novel. And I've grown to appreciate his style in these sections -- clearly, he has done more serious thinking about WWDSD? (What Would Doc Savage Do?) than anyone ever has.

I love having new Docs. Especially well written Docs and by someone who
cares. I still think that the books should contain multiple stories of pulp
length rather than one extended novel. That would really be the Doc that we
all know and love.

I stretched out reading this one, to make it last. Well worth it. Will Murray understand DOC better than any of us, and it shows. This non-canon "prequel" foreshadows whatwould be many issues DOC would deal with (weapons, killing, gadgets, etc.)

first third -- getting to Skull island
second third -- being chased around the island by headhunters and dinosaurs
last third -- KONG!

And in the end, it leaves many questions unanswered. I know I've been the first to raise the issue of Murray's word-count on the new DOCs, but at the end of this one, I ended up wanting more. Why is Kong the last of his kind? How old is he? Were there others before him? How did he get that big? Who built the wall, and what happened to them? What did they do when they got Kong back to Skull Island?

The mark of a good writer and the never-pleased reader -- the book was too long and it wasn't long enough!
