Anybody have any idea about how this works?

Re: Captain Nemo and the Underwater City

Well, my copy arrived today. And, you learn something new every day. It
seems a new DVD format is afoot, and this one is deliberately designed
not to work in your PC drive. It took some digging just to find out what
was going on.

This disc is a "MOD" for "Manufactured On Demand." That means it isn't
pressed like a regular DVD, but made to order. Unfortunately, it is
formatted in such a way that the drive on my PC won't recognize the disc.

That really sucks, as the only reason I bought this disc in the first
place was to make screen captures of the Nautilus. There just aren't any
decent images of this sub available, so the film footage is about all we
have.

Does anyone know how to make a backup from this type of disc? It would
sure be awful to return to the days of having to hit pause while I get
out the sketchbook. . .

Try it one or two other DVD drives.

Also, it might just be a defective disc. Return it for a new one.

Nope. More reports coming in from other users. It's there, and it's
intentional. From Warner:

Q: My DVD wont play on my computer.

A: As noted on the DVD case wrap, DVDs encrypted with CSS may not play
on all computers or DVD player/recorders. This is normal. To address
this, we recommend viewing the DVD on a DVD player that does not have
recording capability.

A: This DVD on-demand disc was recorded using CSS encryption. CSS is
designed to prevent unauthorized reproduction of the DVD.

They've kluged it so it won't work if the drive has write capabilty. I
have NO idea how that helps to prevent piracy.

Sounds like it's the same format ImaginAsian used for their releases,
copy protected DVD-R. Mine worked in my main DVD player and my mac, but
not an old portable player.

So far we've only gotten reports from people using PCs. Mac the Ripper
claims it will take care of it (although if the damn thing won't even
mount I'm not sure how that works).
