From 1943, a bizarre wartime DOC...
Starts off with DOC in DC trying to wrangle a combat assignment. One
of those weird, western Dent characters gets him involved in a big
mystery, and while DOC's unravelling things he meets a madcap heiress
and more adventure. The guys and Pat all show up, the scene shifts to
the isolated Arizona desert, and then to the isolated western coast of
Mexico.
A truly different DOC cover. A U-boat on storm-tossed seas, with a
lurking Nazi sailor, and Pat in a two-piece bathing suit trying to
save a black-haired girl from the water. What the hell? The majority
of DOC covers were so innocent a kid's mom could see them and not
think twice and here we have more of Pat than we've ever seen
before... And it isn't even from the story -- Pat and the girl slip
overboard while the U-boat docks in Mexico. Their wearing bathing
suits because the U-boat commander bought them for his daughters? I
wish Murray had been a bit more forthcoming in his essay in Tollin
#24. Did they have the cover for this one, and Dent gave to work it
into the plot?
I mean, I can see how this cover could sell some magazines. So many
DOC pulps have astonihsingly uninspired covers.
