The estates of old western writers have been successful in regaining
copyrights by bringing out old manuscripts and copyrighting restored,
original versions. But i'm thinking this would not work with the hero
pulps, where you've got a trademarkedhero, right?

There are ongoing battles over Superman and some other comic characters.

I see the recent Doc reprints are using Dent's original manuscripts in
some cases, with material that was never published back in the day.
I would presume the Dent estate and Conde Nast have come to some sort
of agreement over that.

The most recent Conan reprints are interesting too in that they used
Howard's manuscripts, many of which were never published in that form.
This has the effect of putting the "best/most authentic" versions of
the stories back under copyright even though the copyright of the
magazine versions has lapsed in some cases.
