Discussion:
Yet another chance to get a Date to the Dance...

I feel like that girl who never gets asked out to the dance in high school.
We've had so many close offers. Remember Frank Darabont? Remember Ahnold?
Those are just two rumored guys wanting to take us to the dance, and of
course they were just rumors.

Now I read on Sci-Fi Wire that we might have yet another suitor. Will this
be the same-old-same-old, or is this guy really serious? He has decent
credits and has been involved with some hits, but I've heard this before,
and I find myself wondering if it's just more of the same. Their source is
Variety, and I've seen a lot of vaporware from Variety. We can only hope,
but since there is no casting at all for this, it's not quite time to buy a
dress or schedule a salon appointment quite yet.

Well, blame the High School, not the students. Our H.S. had a really
stupid 'drag, no stag' policy, meaning you couldn't go to the dance
without a date. Well, the only reason to do to the dance was to meet
girls! If you already HAD a date, you had better places to go than the
dance. So I've never been to a H.S. dance either. :\

You did catch that I was being allegorical in terms of the recent
announcement of yet another director and script for another supposed Doc
Savage movie, right?

OTOH, DC comics is *definitely* coming out with a Doc comic in the next
few months.

Sure, but, hey, how often do you get an opportunity to rant about the
stupidity of high school dance rules, and explain to girls WHY they
didn't get asked? :)

Indeed. Last time I looked, the newsgroup alt.high-school-dance doesn't
exist, so what you gonna do?

And to make this relevant:

- Ham probably had a date for his high school dance, because what girl
wouldn't want to be seen with him, in THOSE clothes?
- Monk, flying in tha face of all logic, definitely had a date.
- Renny, Johnny and Long Tom *may* have had dates, but it isn't likely.
- Pat Savage certainly had a date, out of plenty of prospects.
- Doc certainly didn't have one, and not just because he didn't go to high
school.

...and neither did I, and I did go to high school. I don't want to talk
about it.

Oh, Renny would have. He'd have been captain of whatever team they had.

Hmm. Living in the Canadian wilderness, among the werewolves? Do we
think Pat even WENT to high school, much less a dance?

Not at all. Especially as an underclassman, the reason was to slow
dance with a particularly interesting and attractive girl you already
knew and liked. You must have missed a memo somewhere along the way. :)

Granted, the dance was usually just the appetizer (especially for
upperclassmen), but why skip the appetizer?

Because we had cars and plenty of places to go, and none of our friends
were going to the dance. Now, if somebody I'd been dating had ever
WANTED to go to the dance, I'd have taken them. IIRC, I had a steady GF
at prom time and she didn't want to go to prom.

Ah. The pickings were very slim in my tiny 7th and 8th grade classes.
And even if they hadn't been, I'm not sure one-on-one dating would have
gone over well at that point with the 'rents.

Our dances were actually a lot of fun, so it wasn't like torture. In
fact, most of us looked forward to 'em as part of the evening. I'm sure
that the thought of skipping a dance (assuming that a readily available
date was in the picture) entirely would have seemed alien to me, even at
that age.

Definitely a YMMV thing. Of course, as underclassmen, none of us had
licenses, let alone wheels. And as upperclassmen, my circle of friends
all seemed to like the dances. Maybe we just lucked out by having
better student groups putting the dances together. :)

Monk and Ham at the high school dance -- now that's a party!

Renny, Long Tom, and Johnny -- now that's a stag line if I ever saw
one!

Young DOC -- studying, of course, because when you're Clark Savagr,
Jr., every night's a schol night!

Pat -- shows up stag-ette, because that causes the biggest stir!

The monkey and the pig -- waiting just off-stage, until the pron king
and queen are about to be crowned, and then bursting out and ...

putting together the dances or not. I've always assumed the 'drag, no

Yeah, I've always just assumed that the admin makes rules like that,
too. But in my case, beyond any such rules, the school groups that
sponsored various dances made them a lot of fun to attend, if only for a
couple of hours before moving on to other post-dance things. But
various people from various classes from my high school have commented
countless times over the years about how good a class we had, whereas
the class ahead of us and the ones behind us were just "okay" or, in one
case, downright dysfunctional. I didn't fully realize it at the time,
but I lucked out into a pretty nice group of people overall.
