my current re-read, and a major continuity issue...

In Chapter 5 it says that Chemistry is just slightly over knee-high to
Monk. But \I can recall other adventures where Chemistry puts on a
coat and is passed off as a person

I can forgive a lot for finally pairing Doc with a girl worth his time!

Dave,

Reading your comments is great. I haven't reread or even thought of some of
these adventures in years. Now I want to read them all again. In some ways
that Thomas Wolfe guy is wrong when he said you can't go home again.

Wasn't Thomas Wolfe Nero's younger brother?

Okay, Dave. Now I've lost all respect for you!

Just kidding. And I love the Nero Wolfe series. I'm collecting them all
over again in those new trade paperback double editions.

Frank,

Or was Thomas Wolfe the other guy who interviewed for the job that
Archie Goodwin got? Good literary skills, but Archie's ability to
take dictation was the key...

No, Dave. You have it all wrong.

Before Archie Goodwin was Gerry Conway. Before him was Marv Wolfman.
Before them were Len Wein, Roy Thomas, Stan Lee and Joe Simon. Altogether a
Marvelous range of fellows...

THE FRECKLED SHARK is the one where DOC adopts the Henry Peace
identity, whom the babe, rhoda havens, is very attracted to.

Interesting psychology when somebody adopts an identity like this --
why does DOC become Henry, why does SUPERMAN become Clark?

And some good bits, with Johnny being DOC's advisor on the opposite
sex, and Monk viewing Henry as a rival

This one held up very well for a 1939.

This one reminds me of The Evil Gnome -- a somewhat more world-weary crew
and a more human (though still heroic) Doc. I like both a good deal (edge
to TFS..). I would like to see these characterizations dealing with
super sagas though..

Interestingly, the original pulp covers of both THE EVIL GNOME and THE
FRECKLED SHARK are both notable "DOC with a babe" covers.
