Unless I've completely garbled the memory, according to Fred Pohl on his
blog, Newt is in fact into science fiction, even wrote a book (that was
never published).

So in fact, this may be deliberate.

Newt's SF book was in fact published by Baen some years back. It was an
alternate history of WWII in collaboration with William Forstchen. It wasn't
particularly political at all, and I rather enjoyed it.
